La Plata club earns 5-Star air quality with COVID purification units
La Plata Social Club in Sheffield became the first club in South Yorkshire to install three Pure Air Systems across its main bar and lounge areas.
The challenge
When COVID-19 hit, Amy at Smart Energy Projects advised Brian about the heightened risk of circulating the virus when using both air conditioning and gas-fired heating. According to the World Health Organisation, coronavirus particles can remain infectious in the air for up to six hours.
Concerned for the safety of staff, committee members, and a largely over-70s membership base—many with underlying respiratory conditions—Brian needed a fast and effective solution. He recognized that air-conditioning could recirculate contaminated air, but constantly cleaning surfaces and leaving windows open in winter were not practical options.
Smart Energy was incredibly helpful and explained the potential risks of the virus being re-circulated when heating our rooms throughout the winter period. As they are also our service provider of our air-conditioning units, she explained that it was their duty of care to inform our Committee and that a FREE infection control survey can be undertaken and then provide a solution so we could continue to trade without the risks. Phil’s detailed report and finding’s after our survey had been conducted were passed by our Committee and it provided factual information from the World Health Organisation alongside C.I.B.S.E for how to operate all of our heating safely in providing adequate ventilation and sanitisation to eliminate the risks for cross infection from the Covid virus.
The solution
Three Pure Air Systems were installed in just one morning, delivering round-the-clock air purification and surface sanitization. Operating all three units costs a total of £76 per year, yet each system kills over 99% of known viruses—a “no-brainer” investment for the club’s wellbeing.
The result
With these systems in place, La Plata Social Club no longer has to keep windows open in cold weather or worry about air-conditioning units recirculating the virus. The Pure Air Systems also reduce heating costs by 20%, saving the club an additional £800 each year—vital support during a challenging time for hospitality. Members can now safely socialise, enjoy a drink, or play bingo without constant concerns about COVID-19.
Upon completion of install we were given our own certification to demonstrate our Pure Air Level Rating of 5 to display at the entrance of our Club’s window for all of our members to see the level we have gone to as a Committee in order to keep them safe and our staff. This means now when tier 3 restrictions are lifted we will be the best prepared Club and will market our areas to attract new members and host a number of activities in the hope that our Club will come through this stronger and better. Despite this year being incredibly tough for all Club’s in the trade I would strongly recommend the installation of Smart Energy’s Pure Air Systems in the fight against Covid so that we can all return to at least some level of ‘normal’ and continue to remain at the heart of our Community and serve our valued members for many more years to come.
